How to Relieve Stress
Sipping warm tea is tranquil, especially if it has a floral scent. The Polynesians drink kava root tea to reduce stress and slip into a full night of deep sleep. Other stress relieving herbs include goldenseal, bee pollen, chamomile, lavender and valerian root.
Stress increases production of adrenal hormones, which increases the metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates while depleting potassium, phosphorus and calcium. Vitamin C, DHEA, b-complex vitamins and L-tryosine are beneficial stress reducers as is a well-balanced diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.
Honey and all carbohydrates (pasta, potatoes, beans, bread, and cereal) have a calming effect on the brain, and the effect is stronger the older the person is. Refined and junk foods create stress on the system, including refined sugar and flours. Onions induce relaxation and drowsiness.
Stress management techniques include meditation, music, conversations with friends, hot baths, yoga, biofeedback, laughter, massage and prayer. A quick way to relieve stress no matter where you are is to take long, slow deep breaths until you feel your body begin to soften.
A change in attitude or lifestyle can eliminate needless strain allowing the body to return to normal functioning. Transforming anger, resentment and fear into forgiveness, acceptance and passion are gateways to freedom from stress. Learning how to replace negative thoughts with positive ones is an extremely effective form of stress reduction. Instead of what you think is bad, focus on what is good in your life.
Under stress, the body feels a need to be active and exercise naturally releases tension. All forms of exercise, including dancing, walking and yoga, ease depression and anxiety by helping your brain release feel-good chemicals.
Banish stress and cultivate an easy breezy lifestyle. Your body will thank you!
